Christmas in Scottsdale

Our Contributing Editor, Poet-in-Residence, and apparently Grump-in-Chief, Bob Weirauch, is at least his honest self when writing about Christmas. He's socializing this holiday season, perhaps only with himself, but socializing nevertheless.

Truth is, he's really not that grumpy, or frumpy, or stumpy. In fact, he's pretty spunky, funky, but, quite possibly, after all of his holiday feasts, he could get a little chunky.

It’s a cool day in Scottsdale just 60 degrees, and the Porches and Lamborghinis got parked with much ease. The wind rustles gently through Royal Palm trees and Kierland Commons has relaxed their parking fees.

It's a retailers delight. But out in the parking lot slouches an old grump with Sciatic Nerve-pain that’s hurting his rump. He sits with less patience as each minute passes.

Nothing escapes his gaze, not the traffic, not the lasses. You know the ones who swish and they sway past the Pottery Barn and the Zinc Bistro Cafe.

This used to be fun, people watching and all, but now it’s just another day at a mall. The highlights today will be a great parking spot because the street space is full and so is the lot.

He’s done this before, year after year. It’s hard to pretend that he’s now in good cheer. There’s at least a dozen Santas and who can count the Reindeer? And the constant Christmas music is a pain in the rear.

So as he sits in his car grumping as the world passes him by. That’s the frenetic pace of Christmas and there’s presents to buy. But there’s the excitement of children and all those you hold dear, so he just grins and bears it. After all, Christmas only comes once a year.

Just curious -- how many of you actually have a bucket list? A written-down list of bucket items that you check-off, delete, add to, or toss in the circular file cabinet. The Power Of Tradition

Our Contributing Editor, Alan Bergstrom, is contributing his thoughts on traditions. They don't just apply to the holidays, but we do hope they travel from one generation to the next. Passing it on is the key, and Alan and his family are doing their very best!

Happiness Should Come From Helping Others

Our Contributing Editor, Paul Rudersdorf, who we favor as "Peaceful Paul", has a framed writing of the Dali Lama resting on his end table, which isn't actually Paul's end table, if you know Paul. Unlike The Rolling Stones, who couldn't get no satisfaction, Paul's the opposite. He's got satisfaction and he's on a roll. We're thankful Paul is never more than a stone's throw from some truly wonderful insights.
