Reflections: On Property Taxes

It's property tax time in the Weirauch household. Therefore, it's also poetry time for our Contributing Editor, Bob Weirauch. At least he's finding some comfort, this year, in paying his property taxes.

Check Writing
As I sat and wrote that last tax check,
I thought ahh, what the heck?
There’s another bill coming next on deck.

A thousand here, a thousand there.
Quit your whining do you really care?
Is it worth ruining your day?
Don’t you have anything nice to say?

Well, I dug deep within my being,
Not being omniscient or all seeing.
I looked for something good to say about the taxes I’m about to pay.

And although I dug deep into my brain,
The weirdest thought flooded my brain.
I know somewhere deep in my core,
That Portage County isn’t going to war.

Some money I pay will light a school,
House the poor or heat a pool.
Some with be used to light a street,
And build a center where people meet.

Some money will be spent to fix and repair,
Not to bomb and kill and wreak despair.

In this I take some solitude along with a sense of gratitude.
It’s said that death and taxes are the only thing you can depend on,
But so are the stars and the morning sun.
And as sure as the earth turns on its tilted axis,
Here comes another year of death and property taxes.

As The Story Goes, Orville Redenbacher Was A Nincompoop

Our founder and Editor-in-Chief, Tom Marks, writes about his father's relationship with Orville Redenbacher. It's a story chock-filled with humor, sadness, and lessons galore that every person can learn from.

Everyone.

Spoiler Alert: It's a long story but well-worth your time to read it. In fact, if it was a short story in book form, you'd be turning the pages faster than you can say, "More popcorn, please". Read it, share it, learn from it.

Lord of the Rings

Our Contributing Editor, Bob Weirauch, doesn't wear a lot of jewelry. Never did, never will (sort of). But he has worn some wedding rings, and then he loses them, and miraculously (and we do mean miraculously) he finds them. But he doesn't always find them, sometimes they find him. Actually, in his retirement, he's learning a valuable lesson: Perhaps it's best if he retires them, too. It's time to read a short story from Bob.

Accepting Retirement?

Our Contributing Editor, and broadcast Hall-of-Famer, Jim Arnold, has retired three times. He doesn't regret a single retirement decision and has found "peace" in his choices. Why wouldn't he? After all, his legendary broadcasting career began with his radio on-air name, "Sunny Jim Arnold".
